This is a great training resource for a caregiver of a child 2-10 years old with autism. The University of Miami/Nova Southeastern University provides a free online training led by a professional Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
Some important details include:
  • A 6-week online parent training
  • Weekly pre-recorded webinars
  • Weekly individual coaching sessions
  • Available in Spanish
This training will equip the caregiver to identify the child’s cause of challenging behaviors and be able to teach the child the appropriate replacement skills through a HIPAA compliant video conferencing software.

Halloween tips for parents:
  • Allow the child to choose their costume
  • Present the costume to the child in advance
  • Countdown the days until the child will wear the costume
    • Practice wearing the costume around the house or out in public, so they become comfortable
  • Give the child the choice to skip the costume
  • Give the child the choice to wear headphones
  • If your child has an allergy, bring extra candy or treats to put in your child’s bag when allergy-friendly candy is unavailable

Halloween tips for the community:
  • A child may not be wearing a costume due to sensory processing difficulties
  • A child who grabs too many candies might have poor fine motor skills
  • A child who does not say “Trick or Treat,” “Please,” or “Thank you” may be non-speaking
    • Some children may use AAC on their trick or treat bag or as a bracelet to communicate
  • If possible, include allergy-friendly and sugar free candy

It’s October and that means it’s International AAC Awareness Month! Check out the special promotions, in-services, webinars, and user spotlights throughout the month to learn more about AAC from speech-language pathologists and AAC users themselves. 
Our very own Kaitlyn Flynn, M.S. CCC-SLP, and Michelle Carter, M.S. CCC-SLP, will be doing an in-service presentation on AAC. Stay tuned for information on the date and time of this presentation.

What is AAC?
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC can be high-tech, low-tech, or no-tech. High-tech AAC includes the use of an app on an iPad or a speech-generating device, low-tech AAC includes the use of materials such as paper and pencil to write or draw, and no-tech AAC includes the use of gestures, expressions, and signs.  
 
Why is AAC important?
AAC provides individuals with the opportunity to communicate. It can be used to augment existing speech and language, or it can be used as an alternative method to verbal speech. It gives everyone the opportunity to participate in conversations and activities with peers, friends, and family.
 
Who can benefit from AAC?
Any individual who is nonverbal, or verbal, can benefit from AAC. Contrary to the beliefs of many, AAC does not discourage speech, but rather encourages and often increases speech productions in users.

The following protocols are in place for those clients attending traditional, in-person therapy:
  • Our waiting room remains closed, all clients are to notify the office of their arrival and their clinician goes out to retrieve them from their cars,
  • no parents, siblings, or outside clinicians allowed in the office,
  • clinicians’ and clients’ hands are washed at the  beginning and end of each session,
  • materials, chairs and tables are sanitized after each client,
  • all clients with any nasal discharge, clear or otherwise, fever, and/or cough are asked to not attend therapy.
